CVE-2024-39279

Description

From CVE.org

Insufficient granularity of access control in UEFI firmware in some Intel(R) processors may allow a authenticated user to potentially enable denial of service via local access.

Statement

Moderate impact: Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems using microcode_ctl are affected by insufficient access-control granularity in UEFI firmware on some Intel processors. An authenticated local user may exploit the issue to cause a denial of service. The Red Hat CVSS v3.1 score is 6.5 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H), matching the upstream v3.1 score; the upstream CVSS v4 score is also Moderate (6.8) but uses a different metric profile. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and the listed RHEL 8 update streams are affected with an out-of-support resolution. RHEL 9.6 is delegated as affected, with a fix being pursued through the delegated product process. RHEL 10.0 is not affected because the vulnerable code is not present.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
