Using a vSphere disk (vmdk) as persistent storage in OpenShift's monitoring stack, pods get stuck in Pending status

Issue

After creating a ConfigMap to configure the monitoring stack to use vSphere's persistent storage (vmdk disks), one of the pods (i.e. prometheus-k8s-1) is stuck in Pending status. The events show the error:

'AttachVolume.Attach failed for volume "pvc-3e87b59e-49b5-4d7c-8372-4894e407a20e": Failed to add disk ''scsi0:4''.'
