OpenShift Container Platform app node VMs are consuming OCP subscription as it was physical hosts

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When trying to subscribe new OCP app nodes VMs (Virtual Machines) using Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Premium (1-2 Sockets) subscription, they are being subscribed as it was physical hosts, not VMs. When running subscription-manager in the app node VMs is possible to see they are registered as Physical:

    # subscription-manager list --consumed | grep -e "Subscription Name" -e "System Type"
Subscription Name: Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Premium (1-2 Sockets)
    System Type: Physical

  • There are limited OCP subscriptions and all of it are being consumed because each subscribed VM are consuming one OCP subscription each, which is not right. The problem is VMs should be subscribed and consume OCP subscriptions as unlimited guests.

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP)
    • 3.x
  • Red Hat Satellite
    • 6.x
