Service rsyslog does not log on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 when using a 7.x configuration file

Issue

  • The following error messages will be seen in /var/log/messages:
Nov 19 14:12:38 rhel6 rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="5.8.10" x-pid="1732" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] start
Nov 19 14:12:38 rhel6 rsyslogd-2066: could not load module '/lib64/rsyslog/imjournal.so', dlopen: /lib64/rsyslog/imjournal.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
 [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2066 ]
Nov 19 14:12:38 rhel6 rsyslogd: the last error occured in /etc/rsyslog.conf, line 10:"$ModLoad imjournal # provides access to the systemd journal"
Nov 19 14:12:38 rhel6 rsyslogd-3003: invalid or yet-unknown config file command - have you forgotten to load a module? [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/3003 ]
Nov 19 14:12:38 rhel6 rsyslogd: the last error occured in /etc/rsyslog.conf, line 43:"$IMJournalStateFile imjournal.state"
Nov 19 14:12:38 rhel6 rsyslogd-2124: CONFIG ERROR: could not interpret master config file '/etc/rsyslog.conf'. [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2124 ]
  • The rsyslog service will not update certain log files appropriately.
  • The rsyslog service will repeatedly stop and start, logging the errors above.
