Issue

  • Why does "\l" in /etc/issue print /dev/ttyS0 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, whereas on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 this prints ttyS0 ?

  • On the RHEL6 box,

     [user@host6 ~]$ cat /etc/issue
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Beta 2 [64-bit] (Santiago Server)
     Kernel \r on an \m (\l)

And in the serial console the below is seen

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Beta 2 [64-bit] (Santiago Server)
 Kernel 2.6.32-37.el6.x86_64 on an x86_64 (/dev/ttyS1)
