What is the right approach to renew subscriptions for Azure virtual machines?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Microsoft Azure (on-demand virtual machines only)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.7+, 7.1+

Issue

  • Red Hat Customer Portal subscription acquired through Azure expires after 30 days.
  • Subscription status shows only active for 30 days

Resolution

If the subscription expires, which can happen if 30-days have passed since last used, accounts need to be re-linked manually. For information on linking accounts using Single Sign On (SSO), see the Microsoft article Single-sign-on into Red Hat Customer Portal.

Root Cause

Azure users with on-demand - or Pay As You Go (PAYG) - RHEL virtual machines may use the Red Hat Customer Portal after linking their Azure account with one at Red Hat. If there isn't an existing Red Hat account, a new one will be created to facilitate this process.

For linked accounts, subscriptions to the Red Hat Customer Portal are only active for 30 days by design. Subscriptions only extend if they are touched again before the 30 days limit expires.
