RHDS multiple network interfaces and SNMP counters index strings limitations

Issue

How to configure SNMP monitoring of several Red Hat Directory Server (RHDS) instances on a single multi-homed platform?

The administration guide have some steps, but it shows the SNMP mibs are configured via port assignments.

This is a problem when running multiple instances using multiple network interfaces, all listening on the same TCP port number 389.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Tikanga)
    Linux ms-test1.sjc.redhat.com 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Tue Aug 18 15:51:48 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  • Red Hat Directory Server 8.1
    redhat-ds-8.1.0-1.el5dsrv

  • SNMP
    net-snmp-5.3.2.2-9.el5
    net-snmp-utils-5.3.2.2-9.el5

  • Multiple network interfaces on 1 system, bound to different ns-slapd processes listening for LDAP service or RHDS "instances", example:
    netstat -lnp|grep 389
    tcp 0 0 10.14.52.45:389 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 6544/ns-slapd
    tcp 0 0 10.14.54.247:389 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 6473/ns-slapd
    tcp 0 0 10.14.54.241:389 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 6404/ns-slapd
