How can I access "Process Instance Description" programatically?

Issue

I would like to set a value in the "Process Instance Description" field of the KIE workbench, and then for each process instance that gets created, extract that data and use it elsewhere in our application. It seems like it should be accessible as a process variable or property of some kind.
