Why did my i386 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 system panic with "Out of memory" when there was swap space available?
Issue
- System panic
- server crashed during stress test.
- The following error is found in /var/log/messages after crash:
kernel: Kernel panic - not syncing: Out of memory and no killable processes...
Environment

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4
- 2.6.9 series kernels including kernel-hugemem and kernel-pae.

32 bit kernel - i386
- Usually (but not always) there is still swap space available.
