    <Details xml:lang="en:us" source="Mitre">
A heap-based out-of-bounds read in DcmRLECodecDecoder::decodeFrame() in dcmdata/libsrc/dcrleccd.cc of OFFIS DCMTK 3.7.0 allows an attacker to read up to 63 bytes of adjacent heap memory, or cause a crash, via a crafted RLE Lossless DICOM file whose pixel data fragment is shorter than the 64-byte RLE header. The function copies 64 bytes without checking the fragment length, a check that the sibling function decode() already performs. Applications that decode RLE images frame by frame (for example, through DcmPixelData::getUncompressedFrame()) are affected. The dcmdrle command-line tool uses decode() and is not affected. The issue is fixed in commit 45469f3c30037e9c7159290e4bb74cd7b3b9ef1d.

    <Details xml:lang="en:us" source="Red Hat">
A flaw was found in DCMTK. A heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability occurs in the frame decoding routine due to missing length validation on image data fragments. By enticing a user or application to process a specially crafted Run-Length Encoded (RLE) DICOM file, an attacker could trigger an out-of-bounds memory read, leading to information disclosure of adjacent heap memory or causing an application crash that results in a Denial of Service (DoS).

    <Statement xml:lang="en:us">
This vulnerability is rated as Moderate impact because exploitation requires a user or application to process an untrusted medical image file, limiting the outcome to bounded heap memory disclosure or a process crash rather than arbitrary code execution. Standard command-line utilities within the package avoid the defective code path, which is primarily exposed to custom applications that perform frame-by-frame RLE decoding. Furthermore, DCMTK is not included in core Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases and is maintained only in community repositories.
