RHEA-2012:0719 - Product Enhancement Advisory
Synopsis
less Shift_JIS enhancement update
Type/Severity
Product Enhancement Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated less package that adds an enhancement is now available for Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 5.
Description
The less utility is a text file browser that resembles the more utility, but
allows users to move backwards in the file as well as forwards. Since less does
not read the entire input file at start-up, it also starts more quickly than
ordinary text editors.
[Updated 10 Jul 2012]
The type of this advisory has been updated to Red Hat Enhancement Advisory. The
package included in this revised update has not been changed in any way from the
package included in the original advisory.
This update adds the following enhancement:
- Shift_JIS (the JIS X 0208 Appendix 1 standard) is a character encoding
standard for the Japanese language. The less utility supports this standard.
However, unless the LESSCHARSET environment variable was explicitly set to
"dos", it failed to display Shift JIS encoded characters properly. This update
corrects the less utility to determine the Shift_JIS character encoding from the
LANG environment variable, so that it is no longer required to explicitly set
the LESSCHARSET variable. (BZ#802613)
Users requiring Shift_JIS encoding support are advised to upgrade to this
updated package, which adds this enhancement.
