RHBA-2009:1234 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
new package: v7

Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
A new package, v7, is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and Red
Hat Enterprise Linux 5. v7 replaces hts in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Hardware Certification (hwcert) test suite replaces hts for certifying
hardware for use with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Description
v7, the test portion of hwcert, verifies the compatibility of hardware
devices. Each v7 test run builds a results database for submission to Red
Hat's hardware catalog as an RPM package.
v7 fixes these bugs:
- when no displays were connected, the video test presented a
"FreeFontPath" error. (BZ#316581)
- htc reported the BIOS manufacturer as the machine manufacturer even when
this was wrong. (BZ#460940)
- suspend tests failed with a "could not verify suspend" error. (BZ#466703)
- the profiler test failed with a "no sample file found" error due to an
apparent resource collision. (BZ#476690)
- the profiler test returned "/bin/umount /dev/oprofile" errors although
the test was passed. (BZ#478498)
- the "--help" option displayed mis-aligned text due to an extra tab.
(BZ#480285)
- hts did not verify all command line arguments. (BZ#480723)
- executing the plan or run command resulted in the "could not detect
devices via HAL, using Kudzu" Note presenting twice. (BZ#481258)
- hts presented debugging information at the console without the "--debug"
option being set. (BZ#482861)
- if test sources were deleted, the info test threw an OSError exception
when it tried to copy the deleted sources. (BZ#482890)
- the cpuscaling test failed when no CPU flags were available. This caused
the test to fail on Itanium architectures. (BZ#483024)
- "hts help" listed an obsolete "discover" option. (BZ#485705)
- the USB test asked "How many unused USB sockets are there?" but the test
requires all USB ports (used or unused) be tested. (BZ#488582)
- hts started the kudzu list by putting a fake device on the list. On
certain systems this caused a traceback error when the "v7 submit" command
was run. (BZ#503857)
- running the info test produced a blank hardware.log file. This blank file
caused "unknown kernel" and "unknown platform" errors when attempting to
upload the resultant rpm to a catalog. (BZ#505432)
- the v7 rpm package was found to not deprecate hts. This was corrected
before release; installing v7 obsoletes hts as expected. (BZ#505477)
- when v7 was used on a fully-virtualized instance of Red Hat Enterprise
Linux running in domU on an Itanium architecture, testing paused to ask the
user for vendor and model information. (BZ#505806)
- a typo in the fully-virtualized tests caused traceback errors. (BZ#506542)
- binary files produced by the info and audio tests were not included in
the results database. (BZ#507370)
- under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, hts failed to find CD-ROM devices. (BZ#508136)
- the "--device" option was ignored. (BZ#512475)
- the v7 results rpm package did not include the sysreport tar ball,
causing the catalog to reject the package. (BZ#514959)
- hardware.log data was changed from kudzu format to hal although the
catalog does not yet recognize hal formatting. (BZ#514961)
- under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4, the catalog did not recognise the
memory test's hardware.log. (BZ#515294)
- the Blu-ray test (see below) ran incorrectly. (BZ#516082)
v7 also adds these enhancements.
- v7 now adds pre-configured kickstart files to speed up and automate Red
Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8 and 5.3 installation. (BZ#230285)
- v7 targets controllers rather than block devices, significantly reducing
multi-disk test times. (BZ#437866)
- v7 now includes Blu-ray testing under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.
(BZ#445164)
- pre-installed, fully-virtualized images of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3
for multiple architectures are available with v7. (BZ#485837)
- the v7 audio test checks now include codec information (as well as
available sound card names or models). (BZ#460979)
- fully-virtualized tests can now download remote images if local
images are unavailable. (BZ#506169)
For more detail regarding these changes see the Technical Notes linked to
in the References section below.
Anyone seeking to certify hardware for use with Red Hat Enterprise Linux,
should install this new package.
