RHBA-2008:0306 - Bug Fix Advisory
Synopsis
smartmontools bug fix update

Bug Fix Advisory
Red Hat Insights patch analysis
Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.
Topic
An updated smartmontools package that addresses several bugs is now available.
Description
The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and
smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring,
Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA
and SCSI hard disks. In many cases, these utilities will provide advanced
warning of disk degradation and failure.
This update addresses the following bugs:
- calling 'smartctl -a' when a Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC) was
present would put the device into an offline state and make the drive
unusable until a reboot. This has been fixed so that calling 'smartacl -a'
gives a "device not supported" error message when it encounters Dell
PowerEdge RAID Controllers.
- the command 'service smartd status' would exit with a zero (0) exit
status even when the smartd daemon was not running.
Users of smartmontools should upgrade to this updated package, which
resolves these issues.
Solution
Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.
