Arista OpenStack Integration

The Arista OpenStack Integration using the ML2 driver for Networking (Neutron) API has been certified for Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

OpenStack is being increasingly deployed in private cloud environments today. End-to-end automated provisioning of tenant networks requires configuration of devices from multiple vendors, such as configuring both Open vSwitch (OVS) and an Arista top of rack (TOR) switch. The Neutron ML2 Plugin separates the decision of what resources to allocate to a given tenant network (done by a “type driver”) from how that information is then provisioned across the virtual and physical infrastructure (done by “mechanism drivers”).

The Arista ML2 mechanism driver enables Arista switches to automate VLAN provisioning. As instances are created on compute nodes, trunk ports attached to the node are automatically configured to allow the required VLANs on the port. This works in parallel with the virtual switch driver (such as OVS) that configures the virtual switch on the hypervisor host, and provides tight integration between network and compute provisioning. Topology awareness within Arista’s EOS can provision VLANs on inter-switch links, automating the configuration of switches not directly connected to compute nodes.

In a VXLAN environment, an Arista switch can provide hardware VTEP (VXLAN Termination Endpoint) services. When deploying in a VXLAN environment, VXLAN VNIs (Virtual Network Identifiers) need to be mapped to VLAN IDs. A centralized EOS instance creates all the mappings in one place, and pushes these mappings out to the VTEP switches. This allows VXLAN to be used as a network overlay without having to manually configure these mappings on every VTEP.
