In high security and critical infrastructure environments it’s often difficult to make a physical connection between different networks but there’s still a need to share a subset of information. The most common form of data transfer is to manually export the data from one network to another by putting it onto a USB stick or CD. This portable data media also becomes a security risk in its own right. But this method isn’t in real-time and data volumes and time pressures mean that, in most cases, it’s no longer practical. In many instances, networks are joined to overcome these issues, without suitable levels of security or protection being put in place.
