Openbook is billing, chargeback, and capacity planning for OpenStack and hybrid cloud environments.

Openbook from Talligent simplifies the tasks of planning, charging, and predicting capacity requirements for cloud services. Built on a comprehensive historical record of your cloud, Openbook tracks allocated and consumed services, providing clear guidance about where to move workloads or add capacity. Key performance metrics show resource utilization across the environment and quickly answer management questions about largest tenants and product costs and revenue. Capacity planning improves with consumption growth reports and utilization stats. Finally, a self-service portal provides tenants with visibility of resource consumption and related costs so they can become better stewards of the cloud environment and drive consolidation and utilization rates up.

No custom coding and integration is required for Openbook to take full advantage of the power and flexibility of OpenStack. Openbook deploys on a set of instances in the cloud being managed and connects to the APIs of the OpenStack services. Cloud metrics are collected in intervals as brief as every 15 minutes. The Ceilometer service is not required for Openbook to function but it does provide higher resolution for service instance reporting, as well as reporting on metered resources such as network bandwidth and object storage bytes. The typical Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform deploys with the key OpenStack services, including Ceilometer, for a comprehensive set of metrics that Openbook can collect and report on.

A single Openbook installation can collect data from multiple OpenStack deployments, creating a consolidated view across a large distributed environment or multiple private managed clouds. A Heat template is available for easy installation within Openstack clouds. You can be up and running in just a few minutes without engaging expensive developers or OpenStack resources.

Openbook is certified to run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 7.x.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Provide a true on-demand cloud infrastructure

Openbook enables enterprises to provide and report on cloud services based on the OpenStack platform. This includes dedicated instances, networks, storage, applications, virtual desktops, and other infrastructure elements or services.

  • Complete customer lifecycle for public cloud providers

Openbook is a full turnkey solution that includes a customer portal for sign-up, integration with Keystone for authentication, budgeting alerting and dashboards, invoicing, and payment processing. Quickly create and charge for new cloud services based on

  • Manage all cloud related services in a single solution

We do OpenStack well but also know that you have other services to account for. Our REST API allows you to push additional infrastructure elements into OpenBook for inclusion into the rate plans and reports. Alternatively, all cost information can be easi

  • Automated workflows

An on-demand private cloud is driven by self-service automation. Openbook includes a workflow engine to eliminate change request ticketing and automate report and

  • Showback / chargeback

Openbook has a robust ratings engine tuned to OpenStack and VMware clouds. Costs can be assigned by tenant, business unit, VP, project, or other cost center. Managers are automatically updated on their accrued costs as well as performance against budget.

  • Capacity planning

Without visibility into the growth of cloud services by department, it is impossible to accurately predict how much new capacity to add, and when. Detailed reports of growth trends and seasonal patterns allow you to better plan for new capacity.

  • Detailed cloud reporting

Quickly answer key management questions about your environment – largest tenants, service growth, accrued costs. The ad hoc reporting allows you to quickly drill down to the relevant details of your cloud environment.

  • Single pane of glass for your private hybrid cloud

Openbook supports VMware and OpenStack environments to show and compare costs and capacity across the variety of cloud solutions in place behind your firewall. Azure support is coming soon.

  • Sprawl identification and control

OpenStack does not consistently remove resources when a project is deleted. Openbook reports on these orphaned entities for easy removal. Openbook also tracks utilization rates to identify instances that may be underutilized based on CPU or memory.
