These release notes contain important information related to the Red Hat JBoss Web Server 5.7.

Making open source more inclusive

Red Hat is committed to replacing problematic language in our code, documentation, and web properties. We are beginning with these four terms: master, slave, blacklist, and whitelist. Chapter 1. RedHat JBoss Web Server 5.7

Welcome to the Red Hat JBoss Web Server version 5.7 release.

Red Hat JBoss Web Server is a fully integrated and certified set of components for hosting Java web applications. It consists of an application server (Apache Tomcat servlet container) and the Apache Tomcat Native Library.

JBoss Web Server includes the following key components:

  • Apache Tomcat is a servlet container in accordance with the Java Servlet Specification. JBoss Web Server contains Apache Tomcat 9.
  • The Apache Tomcat Native Library improves Tomcat scalability, performance, and integration with native server technologies.
  • Tomcat-vault is an extension for the JBoss Web Server that is used for securely storing passwords and other sensitive information used by a JBoss Web Server.
  • The mod_cluster library enables communication between JBoss Web Server and the Apache HTTP Server mod_proxy_cluster module. The mod_cluster library enables you to use the Apache HTTP Server as a load balancer for JBoss Web Server.   • Apache portable runtime (APR) is a runtime that provides superior scalability, performance, and improved integration with native server technologies. APR is a highly portable library that is at the heart of Apache HTTP Server 2.x. It enables access to: advanced IO functionality such as sendfile, epoll and OpenSSL; functionality at the operating system level such as random number generation and system status; and native process handling such as shared memory, NT pipes and Unix sockets.
  • OpenSSL is a software library that implements the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols and includes a basic cryptographic library.

This release focuses on syncing JBoss Web Server with the latest Red Hat JBoss Core Services Apache HTTP Server (httpd). This release also introduces support for installing JBoss Web Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and fixes some security issues.

JBoss Web Server 5.5 and later versions no longer provide OpenShift images based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. This release of JBoss Web Server provides OpenShift images based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.

Chapter 2. New features and enhancements

Red Hat JBoss Web Server 5.7 includes the following new features and enhancements.

2.1. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 support

This release of JBoss Web Server is also certified for use on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. Support is available for installing JBoss Web Server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 from an archive file or RPM packages.

Chapter 3. Deprecated features

The following features are being deprecated in this release.

3.1. Apache CXF and Hibernate ORM artifacts in the JBoss Web Server Maven repository

Red Hat is deprecating the CXF and Hibernate JAR files that are currently available in the JBoss Web Server repository, which you can download as jboss-web-server-5.7.x-maven-repository.zip from the Red Hat Customer Portal. Red Hat will remove the CXF and Hibernate JAR files from jboss-web-server-X.X.x-maven-repository.zip in a future release.

In the JBoss Web Server 5.7 and 5.8 releases, Red Hat will continue to provide CXF and Hibernate JAR files in jboss-web-server-5.X.x-maven-repository.zip, but Red Hat does not provide any further updates to these JAR files except for any possible security fixes.

Note

In JBoss Web Server 5.7 and future versions, Red Hat will continue to provide and maintain CXF and Hibernate JAR files in the Red Hat hosted Maven repository, which you can access at https://maven.repository.redhat.com/ga/.

Apache CXF is a framework that you can use to build and develop services that use front-end application programming interfaces (APIs) such as JAX-WS and JAX-RS. Hibernate ORM is an object-relational mapping framework that you can use to connect JBoss Web Server to Java database connectivity (JDBC) data sources.

Chapter 4. Installing the Red Hat JBoss Web Server 5.7

You can install the JBoss Web Server 5.7 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Microsoft Windows. For more information see the following sections of the installation guide:
