Abstract

This document lists and briefly describes new and improved features of Red  Hat Development Suite 2.1.

Chapter 1. About Red Hat Development Suite

Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 includes several Red Hat products such as Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio 11.1 and Red Hat Container Development Kit 3.2, as well as some dependencies for each of these products.

Support information for Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 is as follows:

  • Both the Online and Bundled installers are supported for Windows 7, 8, and 10.
  • Both the Online and Bundled installers are supported for macOS. These installers run on macOS 10.9 or newer.
  • Supported for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 using the standard package management system.

Chapter 2. Installation Options

Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 includes the following installation options:

  • Windows-only Installers (Supported)

    • An Installer that has an initial download of 1 GB and includes Red Hat Container Development Kit, Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio , OpenJDK, and Cygwin for installation. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Tooling, Red Hat JBoss Fuse on JBoss EAP, Red Hat JBoss Fuse on Apache Karaf, Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, VirtualBox and Kompose are not included in the installer and have to be downloaded during the installation time.
    • An Online Installer that is a 60 MB download and downloads the required components during the installation process.
  • macOS-only Installers (Supported)

    • An Installer that has an initial download of 1 GB and includes Red Hat Container Development Kit, Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio, OpenJDK and Cygwin for installation. Red Hat JBoss Fuse Tooling, Red Hat JBoss Fuse on JBoss EAP, Red Hat JBoss Fuse on Apache Karaf, Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, VirtualBox and Kompose are not included in the installer and have to be downloaded during the installation time.
    • An Online Installer that is a 60 MB download and downloads the required components during the installation process.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux

    • Red Hat Development Suite uses RPM packages to install Red Hat Container Development Kit, Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio, OpenJDK , and Kompose.

Chapter 3. What Is New in Red Hat Development Suite?

3.1. Technology Preview

Kompose 1.3.0 is included as a Technology Preview feature in Red Hat Development Suite. See Section 3.2, “Updated Component Versions” for details.

3.2. Updated Component Versions

Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 has the following version updates:

  • Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio 11.1
  • Red Hat Container Development Kit 3.2
  • Kompose 1.3.0 (Technology Preview)
  • OpenJDK 8u151
  • Cygwin 2.9.0-3

3.3. Enhanced User Interface

Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 includes several new user interface changes and an additional installation step. The user interface changes for Windows and macOS are similiar except Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 integrates with the touch bar on macOS.

Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 integrates with the Touch Bar only with macOS that support Touch Bar.

See Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 Installation Guide for detailed installation instructions. The following is an overview of the installer changes in this release:

  1. Right click the Welcome window to open the menu. The new menu items are Help and About Red Hat Development Suite.

  2. From the menu list, click Help or press F1 to go to Red Hat Development Suite documentation.
  3. From the menu list, click About Red Hat Development Suite to go to the About window.

    Figure 3.3 shows what you can do from the new About window:

  4. On the Welcome window, click Next to continue.
  5. On the Target Folder window, add a path to the target directory for the Red Hat Development Suite installation. Click Next to continue.
  6. On the Selection window (previously called Confirmation window), you can click Select All to select all components for installation, or click Clear All button to clear all components for installation. You can also view the download size of every component on the Selection window.

    Figure 3.5 shows the download size and new buttons.

  7. The new Confirmation window displays:

    • Components that are selected for installation.
    • Download status for every component. The Download status can be either Previously Downloaded, Selected to download or Downloaded.
    • Total Download size.
    • Total Install size.

  8. On the Account window, enter your Red Hat Developer login credentials. You can select the new Remember me checkbox to save your Red Hat Developer login credentials as you log in. Click Download and Install to continue.
  9. On the new Download and Install window, a progress bar shows the progress for a component selected for downloading and installing. The components are downloaded and installed sequentially. The downloading progress for the total download size for all of the selected components is displayed.

    If an error occurs during the download & installation process, a window is opened which states the download failed. On the new Download and Install window, you can click the Details button to review the error logs.

Chapter 4. Known Issues

Red Hat Development Suite issues are now tracked in GitHub.

4.1. Known Issues

Red Hat Development Suite 2.1 has the following known issues:

  • JBDS-4404 - DevSuite 1.4 Installer hung during install waiting for cygwin
  • JBDS-3983 - Development Suite Installer should work behind proxy
  • JBDS-4209 - Request for Administrator credentials should be shown once
  • JBDS-3827 - DevStudio installation fails when (windows) user has non-ascii chars in the name
  • JBDS-3956 - Installer should let to update deteched aravle virtualbox
  • JBDS-4376 - Uninstaller for Mac
  • JBDS-4369 - Provide a .exe for uninstaller on Windows
  • JBDS-4341 - Detect pending reboot and ask to reboot before continue with installation

4.2. Closed Issues

  • JBDS-4485 - Deselected components get selected during second detection run
  • JBDS-4554 - Replace context menu in installer with normally expected UI elements: buttons and links
  • JBDS-4576 - Implement frame-less about dialog with 'OK/Close' button
  • JBDS-3622 - Installer - When an install fails, the install UI simply stops - the user is not presented with a cancel/quit button
