7.5. Launching an Instance
To launch an instance from the Dashboard you must have first:
- Installed the Dashboard.
- Uploaded an image to use as the basis for your instances.
- Created a network.
Procedure 7.5. Launching an Instance using the Dashboard
- Log in to the Dashboard.
- In the Project tab, click on under the menu.
- Click the button. The Launch Instance dialog is displayed.
- By default, the dialog opens to the Details tab.
- Select an Availability Zone for your instance from the dropdown list. The default option is
nova. - Enter an Instance Name to identify your instance.
- Select a Flavor for your instance. The flavor determines the compute resources available to your instance. After a flavor is selected, their resources are displayed in the Flavor Details pane for preview.
- Enter an Instance Count. This determines how many instances to launch using the selected options.
- Select a boot option from the Instance Boot Source dropdown list.You have the following boot options:
- Boot from image - If you choose this option, a new field for Image Name is displayed. You can select the image from the dropdown list.
- Boot from snapshot - If you choose this option, a new field for Instance Snapshot is displayed. You can select the snapshot from the dropdown list.
- Boot from volume - If you choose this option, a new field for Volume is displayed. You can select the volume from the dropdown list.
- Boot from image (creates a new volume) - With this option, you can boot from an image and create a volume by choosing Device Size and Device Name for your volume.
- Boot from volume snapshot (creates a new volume) - Using this option, you can boot from a volume snapshot and create a new volume by choosing Volume Snapshot from a dropdown list and adding a Device Name for your volume.
- Click the Access & Security tab and configure the security settings for your instance.
- Select an existing keypair from the Keypair drop down box or click the + button to upload a new keypair
- Select the Security Groups that you wish to apply to your instances. By default only the default security group will be available.
- Click the Networking tab and select the network for the instance by clicking on the network's + sign.If you have logged in as the
demoIdentity (Keystone) tenant, choose the private network, due to the ownership of the private and public networks. - Click the button.
You have just created a Compute instance.
Note
To launch the instance console from the Dashboard:
An instance of the VNC console is run within the browser.
- On the Instances tab, click the name of your instance. The Instance Detail page is displayed.
- Click the tab on the resultant page.
