VMware virtual machine cannot detect smart card reader

We are in the process of building an IdM infrastructure. We have three IdM servers that are replicating between each other. I can successfully log in using passwords, public keys, and OTP to clients. However, I am unable to authenticate using a smart card (CAC). It appears that the ESXi host vm is unable to detect the smart card reader on the physical host.

Is there a way to detect the card reader? We have the root and intermediate certificates installed on the IdM servers, and the certificates are listed when a client is registered. VMware doesn't allow us to attach the card reader as a usb device.
