Custom squid configuration using external files using registry.redhat.io/rhel9/squid

I am attempting to deploy the container registry.redhat.io/rhel9/squid and be able to provide a custom squid.conf file using files that are stored on the host system.

I have been unsuccesful in being able to configure the squid.conf file outside of the container so that my changes will persist.

Has anyone used this container before and got it to work with an external configuration?
