Satellite Doc Provisioning Order-of-Operations

Posted on

Looking for advice here.

Situation: Build automated kickstart provisioning template on Satellite server to deploy environment VMs.

Limitations: No PXE/DHCP allowed on the network (??reasons??). This appears to be overcome by section 7.7. Implementing PXE-less Discovery in the Satellite PROVISIONING GUIDE (ver. 6.10). Also, no interaction with VMware API to create VMs.

Questions:
- Does Satellite need to have Red Hat OS installed as described in section 2.3. Creating Operating Systems of the PROVISIONING GUIDE? In other words, if my baseline requires RHEL 8.4, do I need to create an OS per the instructions in that section or is it built-in?

  • Do architechtures/HW models NEED to be created in order to set up provisioning?

  • From what I gather in the doc, I see the order of operations for initial testing to be the following:
    --- Create OS
    --- Create HW/Arch
    --- Create Partition Tables
    --- Create Provisioning Template
    --- Build discovery image
    --- Test on blank VM

Does the list appear complete?

Thx for the help,

--- Michael
