Is it recommended that VMware tools kernel modules be updated with VMware provided libraries?
RHEL 6.x ships with built in kernel modules for the following:
vmxnet3
pvscsi
vmmemctl
We are looking to overwrite them using
vmware-config-tools.pl --clobber-kernel-modules=...
to ensure that the VMware modules are in sync with the ESXi layer.
Is this what RHT is expecting?
Is this what the community commonly does?
Responses
Overwriting the shipped modules is fine.
Ordinarily with third-party modules we'd ask you to revert back to ours if we suspect they're the cause of a problem, however in this case we're just re-shipping GPL VMWare modules so we would likely need to get backend support from VMWare to troubleshoot these anyway.
Worst case scenario we'll ask you to reinstall our kernel (with our modules) and reproduce the error.
One thing I would suggest is to use the RPM installer for VMWare Tools, this makes it much easier to do upgrades of Tools, and easier for us to see the version of Tools installed if you do log a support case.
