Image Registry Storage Options for Vmware

Using OCP 4.6 on VMware 6.7 U3. We are currently running the emptyDir option for our image registry as we don't have anything in terms of external storage like NFS or the CSI option from Red Hat. This seems to store a copy of the image registry on all CoreOS nodes. What I am wondering is if we use the NFS option, does this result in a centrally store for all images i.e. the CoreOS nodes don't store the images and simply pull them form this NFS store or do they still maintain a local cache?
