Questions on setting up kdump

Latest response

I'm trying to setup kdump on RHEL7 VM and following the Red Hat documentation:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/kernel_administration_guide/kernel_crash_dump_guide

I was able to install kdump via yum and enabled the daemon and added the entry into /etc/default/grub

I crashed the system and created a directory and files under /var/tmp

I try to use the following command to find process info and other things that were going on when the system crashed:

crash /var/tmp/127.0.0.1-2019-09-26-08:22:58/vmcore /usr/lib/debug/lib/modules/`uname -r`/vmlinux

However there is no directory for /usr/lib/debug/lib/modules.

What am I missing here? Or what am I not doing right here so I can view this output correctly?

thanks

Hi,

Judging by your description of the problem, it is necessary to install the kernel-debuginfo package that corresponds to your running kernel, which provides the data necessary for dump analysis.

I believe you need to install kernel-debuginfo package with the same version as your kernel:

I don't have that channel currently, that's why I can't install that package, after reading thru the solution.

Christopher,

You should be able to enable the channel for the yum command with the following:

yum --enablerepo rhel-7-server-debug-rpms install kernel-debuginfo-$(uname -r)
