Install / Boot Issues

Latest response

I'm having a terrible time getting my RHEL 7.4 install to boot.

The install goes well. However when rebooting the controller array will not boot. I've tried by EFI install and legacy and nada.

Supermicro Hardware
Seagate Enterprise 4X 4TB Drives
AOC-SAS3008L-L8 controller card (running LSI-3008-IR mode) FW 16.00.0100-IR
Setup all drives in controller as independent, Raid0, Raid10 etc no boot on any levels.

I've overlooked something.

Any insight or a direction would be helpful.

NOTE- I wanted to add that m getting a black screen and blinking cursor when the bios/efi is trying to boot the system

Also the SAS3008 controller is treating the (HDA 0) 4 drives as one and I am trying to set it up with the intention of using it as HW controlled raid10

Hi Brendon,

You may have to first check with hardware manufacturer and check if there is any settings that are not properly configured in the controller. You may have to rebuild the initramfs image with proper disk drivers if not added... this would help in that situation https://access.redhat.com/solutions/365693

Thank for the info Sadashiva. Taking a look now. Ill post with the results.

negative on this solution

Hi Brendon,

What happens when you switch from RAID to AHCI mode in the BIOS settings ? ... That might be the possible solution. :)
Suggestion for the installation setup : AHCI mode enabled / RAID mode disabled / UEFI enabled / Secure Boot disabled

Christian, I have tried several combos with what you have suggested previously without positive results. thank you! Any suggestions are certainly appreciated.

Have you contacted your hardware vendor regarding this? As per your initial statement, it looks to be some problem with your disk controller.

Also the SAS3008 controller is treating the (HDA 0) 4 drives as one and I am trying to set it up with the intention of using it as HW controlled raid10

Also, let me know if you could switch console screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2/F3....keys and if so, any messages you get to see over there.

Sadashiva... Unfortunately it was not even getting that far in the boot sequence to switch between terminals.

Everyone thank you for your help. Ultimately the issue was with a malfunctioning firmware on the sas3008 controller, no matter if its was set to boot via OS or BIOS it would hang just before Grub initiated. I wiped the controller, updated the firmware (3 times) and now its booting as intended vi OS. (not BIOS)

Thanks again for your help!

You're welcome, Brendon ! :) I'm glad that you could solve the problem.

Regards,
Christian
