RHEL 7.4 - Recover broken desktop GUI

Latest response

Hi,
I have a fresh install of redhat 7.4-64bit on an Intel based system.

I've managed to corrupt the Gnome interface and ideally want to restore the defaults, like mentioned in this article under "reconfiguring the X server configuration":
[Fix graphical display issues] (https://access.redhat.com/solutions/5338)

How do I do that in RHEL 7?
Thanks in advance!

Symptoms:
When I run "startx" from the command line, it hangs for a moment, then I get a message to check the Xorg log and "serverauth.1845 does not exist."
There are no errors in Xorg log.
Background:
I originally installed the "Server with GUI" package. Then changed my mind, did a 'yum group remove' and installed "GNOME Desktop".

Thanks Jan Gerrit,

Do you think that Don should file a bug report or better report the circumstances to the customer support team ?

Regards,
Christian

Hi Christian, Jan,
Do you have any update? Thx.

Hi Don,

No update from my side, but I checked it again in my RHEL 7.4 Server VM, the same output as from my physical installation - it seems to be correct :

Hi Don,

I suggest you open a support case, if possible. Let me know if this possible for you or not.

If not, I can open one for you, be aware it might take some time for me to report back to this discussion.

Regards,

Jan Gerrit Kootstra

Hi Jan, I've raised the support case #01951046. My subscription is self support so I may not get a response so quickly.
Best regards, Don.

Hi Don,

Jan Gerrit provided the information about the hidden option in another post.
What do you get when you execute sudo yum group list hidden ?
In my case about 30 more additional groups are offered.

Regards,
Christian

$ sudo yum repolist hidden
[sudo] password for v4:
Loaded plugins: langpacks, product-id, search-disabled-repos, subscription-
              : manager
repolist: 0

Hi Don,

Sorry, I accidentally made a typo (already corrected) ... the command is : sudo yum group list hidden ! :)

Regards,
Christian

Hi Don,

I have set up a new Server (Minimal installation without a GUI) to test something again for you, this time in standard configuration with LVM and XFS.
Now I could reproduce your experience - only a few groups ... please execute sudo yum group list hidden and tell me if the additional groups are offered. When I execute the command with the hidden option, a bunch of additional groups including desktop environments are offered to install. :)

Regards,
Christian

This is what came back:

Hey Don,

Great - seems that we've found the solution. Although I have no clue why this is different on my setup with Standard partitioning and ext4 or if this even is the root cause at all (but it is the only difference between the setups) ... anyway, most important is that you can find and install groups now.

Cheers :)
Christian

Hi Christian,
Sorry but I'm trying to get up to speed with this and still a little confused. Any idea why these groups are 'hidden' and do I need to do anything differently?
Best regards,
Don.

No Don,

I have no idea why the groups are hidden and no, there is nothing else or different you have to do - everything is okay now.
You can't imagine how glad I am that we could solve this "general thing" in the end, it really was about to driving me nuts. :)

Regards,
Christian

All,

I asked a question in my RH Case how to unhide groups.

Still no response.

Regards,

Jan Gerrit

Hi Jan Gerrit,

You know what ? I didn't even know that hidden groups exist before. :)
Thank you for bringing it up and providing this info in your other post.

Regards,
Christian

Hi Christian Labisch, Jan Gerrit,
Thanks for the much needed support. All appreciated!
Best regards,
Don.

You are very welcome Don,

We are always ready to help and glad that we could find a solution. :)

Regards,
Christian

yum grouplist hidden is the way to see all groups. RH support mentions that it is the way to go, for it is denoted in the manpage of yum. Attempts to remove the user visible = no option did not work. Upstream decided was the reply.

Thanks for adding this information Jan Gerrit,

Well, in the end it's not so important if groups are hidden or not, important is to know that yum group list hidden shows all available groups.

Thanks again for your valuable contribution. :)

Regards,
Christian

Log in as the user seeing the issue and run this command gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel and restart vnc fixed the problem on my end.

I had installed RHEL 7.4 Workstation on a HP Z8 workstation yesterday but the moment NVidia Graphics driver ( NVidia Quadro P6000) was installed GUI disappeared. Today a fresh RHEL installation was done and again the same issue is back.....can somebody help in getting the GUI back?
