X windows won't start after updating rhel 6.6 to 6.9

Latest response

After i updated rhel 6.6 to rhel 6.9 through yum update, X window did not start at all. Linux itself is running at level 3. Can you advise me how to cope with? Before updating, i had used NVIDIA's own graphic driver instead of nouveau driver. Thanks in advance.

Try installing nvidia-detect and kmod-nvidia drives from elrepo site.

  • Import the GPG keys and install the elrepo package as indicated here:
rpm --import https://www.elrepo.org/RPM-GPG-KEY-elrepo.org (external link)
rpm -Uvh http://www.elrepo.org/elrepo-release-6-8.el6.elrepo.noarch.rpm (external link)

http://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php

  • After run the command "nvidia-detect". This shows which nvidia device is detected. Later, install the specified driver and reboot the system, and check if that helps.

Hi Sadashiva,

Another option would be to install the NVIDIA drivers from RPM Fusion.
The drivers are known to work reliably, here is how it has to be done ->

Hi Yutaka,

Did you use the drivers from elrepo or the installer from the nVidia website? If you used the installer from the nVidia website, you can run it again and if asked to overwrite current configuration or module answer with yes or continue what applies to question.

Hi Jan Gerrit,

As Yutaka says that he uses "NVIDIA's own graphic driver", we can assume that he installed it using the .run file from NVIDIA ... but as he upgraded the system from RHEL 6.6 to 6.9, I recommend a "clean" drivers installation. :)

Hi Yutaka,

Uninstall every NVIDIA software you currently have installed.
Reboot the system and reinstall the (current) NVIDIA drivers.
Reboot the system again. Do everything from virtual console.

Hi Christian,

You copy this line: "but as he upgraded the system from RHEL 6.6 to 6.9" and then mention RHEL 7.x commands. I run a Lenovo ThinkStation, with RHEL 6.x server and have nVidia GeForce card since the update to RHEL 6.7, never needed to remove the software, just had to overwrite the Xorg config and built new kernel modules.

The commands I advise for RHEL 6.x as root:

runlevel 3

sh nVIDIA-Linux-x86_86-{version}.run

runlevel 5

Rebooting after the installation of the new kernel modules, is good pratice, but I would do that after the test with runlevel 5

Thank you for this information, Jan Gerrit !

I've never used RHEL 6, so I didn't know that it's different there.
I will remove the commands to avoid confusion. Thanks again ! :)

Christian
