'md5sum' binary - when is it getting obsoleted?

Latest response

Hello,

In line with recent move away from MD5 algorithms (especially in RHEL 7.4), I was wondering about the command 'md5sum' itself. Are there any plans to remove that binary from the systems? The reason I ask is that it's a big part of many legacy systems that our clients use, so trying to get them to use something like 'sha256sum' will require a great deal of planning on our side.

If it were to be deprecated (think this would be unlikely in 7.x or even 8.x, as it's in coreutils), I would expect someone to create an epel package to fill the gap.

I think it's wise to start moving away from the continued use of it, but I don't think it's going to be pulled out from under you.
