Can not get updates

Latest response

NOTE: I've listed 'redhat enterprise linux for real time' as the OS since I can't find an entry for standard Red Hat linux (7.4 beta)
In any case, I see that /etc/yum.repos.d to be empty except redhat.repo files which has no meaninful contents.

yum update - gives me this info

Loaded plugins: langpacks, product-id, search-disabled-repos, subscription-
: manager
This system is registered with an entitlement server, but is not receiving updates. You can use subscription-manager to assign subscriptions.
There are no enabled repos.
Run "yum repolist all" to see the repos you have.
To enable Red Hat Subscription Management repositories:
subscription-manager repos --enable
To enable custom repositories:
yum-config-manager --enable

--- Any of the commands above are not useful to me. I have used subscription-manager to register the product.
Can someone please help? After tiring to do update -really- i've chosen to create post here. Thanks in advance.
Ravi
PS : not sure if it's worth metioning, I am only trying out Redhat through their developer program - and am not a paying customer.
I've tried copying files yum.repos.d, but no avail.
Only I needed to try - which I haven' t yet - is to use server dvd as source of packages.

Hi Christian

Thanks a million . Your guidance of going for RHEL 8.2 instead of 8.3 solved all problems which I was facing . It was really very painful to see nothing is working inspite of emailing here and thre contacting customer services and going request from here to technical contact center and not getting what I was after .

You have always provided to the point answers and it worked for my case. Will keep following and bothering you in this linux journey . Hope you you can tolerate beginners like us going forward or atleast can redirect .

Thanks again

with best regards

Pradeep Nehe

Hi Pradeep,

Glad to read you've got it done and that you could achieve what you wanted. :)
You absolutely do not bother me, we all were beginners at some point of time !

Christian

Hi Christian

I have noticed that when running in RHEL8.2 my system hangs sometimes . Yesterday it happened once and today 3 times . Only button that responds is CAPS LOCK key when I enters it . System does not respond to anything else . This never happens in windows on the same machine which is dual boot .

I installed couple of software installations such as Docker , kubernetes ,Jenkis . Can it be the problem . Shall I remove those softwares ?

I wish CNTR + ALT + DLT could work here too but I have no clue . Any idea how can I handle such situations ? Only way for me to come out of this loop is hard power off and power on. I wish I could avoid this and get a fix or understand how to eliminate this.

Is there any log file which I can possible provide for anyone to diagnose and suggest how to fix this hanging issue . I thought I had a strong machine Dell Precision Tower 3420 ( Intel Xeon ) server which never ever hangs with Windows . I could not remember well when was last time my Windows was in hung state and I had to poweroff.

with best regards Pradeep Nehe

Hi Pradeep,

Please open a new discussion when you have new questions that differ from the main thread,
in this case "Can not get updates". If I hadn't subscribed to mail notifications, I would not even
have noticed your question being placed somewhere "in the middle of nowhere" of the thread.

Regarding your question : it is somewhat broad - it can be "this and that". What graphics card
is being in use ? What exactly did you install before the problem appeared ? Which third party
repositories did you add ? And so on ... Also, have you checked the journal (journalctl) ? :)

Regards,
Christian

Hi Chrisitan ,

My apologies ,

I do not have troubleshooting skills but intereseted to develop the same.

Last 2 times when it was hanged I was working on Jenkins in google chrome . I was updating Jenkins build in tools where it got hand . It happend 2 times in a row and worried it will hang again if I open localhost:8080 for jenkins and try to update any build in tool inside jenkins.

I have just raised a new thread https://access.redhat.com/discussions/5509321 I did not wanted topost journatlctl logs as it was too large but i had .

You can choose to use this new thread if that makes sense.

with best regards Pradeep Nehe

All's okay - no reason to apologize, Pradeep ... I'm gonna check out your new discussion thread. :)

Regards,
Christian

Hi Pradeep,

Be aware Beta releases do not have a regular patch release schema to allow customers to find bugs in the software.

so there might not be any updates available until the General Available release of RHEL 8.3.

Regards,

Jan Gerrit

Ok Thanks Jan ,

Can you please guide why am I getting this Error and how to fix this ? As suggested earlier I removed these two files but still i continue to get this error.

[root@rhel8-3-dell-desktop ~]# sudo yum update

Pradeep Nehe,

If you would, please surround the code you post with three tilde characters "~~~" (without the quotes)

So three tildes before the code

your code in between the three tildes

Another three tilde characters after the code above

Example:

 [root@rhel8-3-dell-desktop ~]# sudo yum update

This will make this much easier for those helping you to read your output.

Regards,
RJ

Thanks a lot for this tip . I am complete beginner here . I will use these from now onwards

To understand what you posted, I repost it with an easier to read layout

[root@rhel8-3-dell-desktop ~]# sudo yum update

[root@rhel8-3-dell-desktop ~]#
[root@rhel8-3-dell-desktop ~]#

The error states there are not no enabled repository in a file in one of the following repositories:

"/etc/yum.repos.d", "/etc/yum/repos.d", "/etc/distro.repos.d"

Instead of making a repository being enabled, by deleting all the files you implicitely made them all disabled, so first you need to rebuild some of the files you removed.

Try: subscription-manager refresh, if this does not rebuild the files, redo the steps Christan Labish already mentioned.

Then show us the content of the redhat.repo file:

cat /etc/yum.repo.d/redhat.repo

Jan Gerrit

Thanks Jan ,

I have done everything each and every strep you and Christian suggested . Attached is the requested output below.

Can you please guide what next steps I need to do . I am complete beginner thought I could get 1 yer free redhat developer account created and start learning Red Hat first time in my life.....

Hence I created one free account ppnehe@gmail.com and downloaded and installed default image .

Hi Pradeep,

As you say you are a "complete beginner", I'd suggest to start with a stable release, and not with
a beta. The next step would be to read the documentation carefully before installing something.
Also, don't provide private information (like your mail address) on a public forum, like this one. :)

Regards,
Christian
