How many KVM based VM can be install on the same physical server?

Latest response

I have subscribed for RHEL, 2Socks/Nodes.
I Would like to know how many Host and/or KVM based VM can be install on same physical server having two precesors only with the current subscription.
i.e. One Host and x KVM based VM.
or only y numbers of VM.
or only one host only.

Hi Rajesh,

I've installed a lot of KVM based VM systems on a workstation before, but the real answer here lies in how much RAM you have, how much RAM you divide up to your guest VM systems, and allocating storage. In principle, making sure you don't over-tax your host system by either RAM or disk contention or other factors.

When I say "allocating storage", I'm really talking about how KVM VM by default puts it's storage somewhere under /etc/ - and I avoid that. I'd recommend having at least one other SSD or HDD on your system to take the VM load off of your primary Operating System (OS) disk, especially if you wanted to have numerous KVM VM systems. So make sure to put the location you store your KVM VM systems to a place that is not on your primary OS drive.

Some others can probably give you additional assistance here if they have a better idea of what you intend to do with these VM systems. In some cases, I had to do some unique network bridging between the host and the VM in order for things to see it from outside your system (I was told by a customer to implement a collection of systems under KVM VMs a while back and had to do some unique network things to make it visible to systems outside the host due to some unique issues).

What server roles did you intend for these systems? What did you have in mind? That will help others here to help you further.

Hope it goes well. .
