Nvidia Quadro NVS 295 - crash after kernel upgrade

Latest response

Driver provided by Nvidia works if installed as per this solution:

https://access.redhat.com/solutions/1155663

The bad part is: each time kernel is upgraded, this leads to system crash which shows up as white screen with "Oops. Something went wrong :(" message.

It is difficult to tell what causes it however these symptoms occur quite reliably:

  • by repeating these steps, and sometimes reinstalling kernel & dracut, the system seems to work again.

  • immediately after performing the steps from the above solution and a "soft" reboot, there is chance that the system will boot up.

  • however after a "hard" (power off - on) reboot, the system crashes again with the same "Oops.. " message.

I need to use Nvidia driver. It displays text much crispier than the nouveau driver which saves me a visit or two to an optician.

This nvidia card was supplied by Lenovo with the original pc. It works without any issues with Windows 7. There were fewer problems with rhel 7.0-7.1. It is 7.2 where things started to get somewhat out of hand. In total this "Oops" screen showed up more than 20 times. The only way out after this "Oops" screen is hard reboot into recovery mode.

Could you please at least try to test kernel upgrade with Nvidia driver?

Using the kmod-nvidia RPM package from elrepo as described in the comments section of the solution you referenced will resolve the issues you are having upon each kernel update.

Ta for suggestion. The crash was resolved however there were new errors which prevented OS from loading.

I reinstalled the system from new and kept the nouveau driver.
