Bonding ethernet interfaces on different layer 2 - vlans

Latest response

Hallo,

With 2 servers with two nic for interconnect, each nic has its own dedicated switch and vlan for each server,

I am wondering if it is possible to bond in mode 1 (a/b) those two nics, says eth0 and eth1, in a layer 2 vlan on different switches to use them as interconnect.

Thanks in advice,

edm

If the two bonding slaves connect into the same broadcast domain, it's a valid config:

+------+ +------+
| SW1  ==trunk== SW2  |
|VLAN10| |VLAN10|
+--+---+ +--+---+
   | |
   | |
   | |
+--+---+ +--+---+
| eth0 | | eth1 |
+------+-------+------+
|bond0 (active backup)|
+---------------------+

If the two bonding slaves are in different broadcast domains, that is wrong:

+------+ +------+
| SW1 | | SW2 |
|VLAN10| |VLAN20|
+--+---+ +--+---+
   | |
   | |
   | |
+--+---+ +--+---+
| eth0 | | eth1 |
+------+-------+------+
|bond0 (active backup)|
+---------------------+
