Hyper-V Host, RHEL VM - Unable to Register System

Latest response

We bought a Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Virtual Datacenters subscription and I'm attempting to update my first virtual machine, which is under a Hyper-V host. I've run through this doc (https://access.redhat.com/solutions/253273) but the system shows as unsubscribed.

[root@localhost ~]# subscription-manager list --available --all
+-------------------------------------------+

Service Type: L1-L3
Multi-Entitlement: Yes

What am I doing wrong?

Did you try -

# subscription-manager attach --pool=8a85f98148a8c1a00148b997a5957064

And if so, what was the result?

[root@localhost ~]# subscription-manager attach --pool=8a85f98148a8c1a00148b997a5957064

Hi again Matthew - I apologize for this being a bit iterative as we work through this. I, also, am a bit new to using Subscription Manager.

I believe your next steps will be to list the repos available and enable the ones you believe you need.

subscription-manager repos --list
subscription-manager repos --enable=rhel-6-server-optional-rpms

https://access.redhat.com/solutions/265523

Iterative is good ... this is our first RHEL subscription so I want to learn as much as possible.

[root@localhost ~]# subscription-manager repos --list
This system has no repositories available through subscriptions.

I'm wondering if something is up with our subscription?

Something definitely seems wrong based on what you have tried.

I would recommend opening a support case to get it addressed. It is possible that 'Andreas' might have some suggestions that get you taken care of while you are creating the case. Otherwise, I assume this should be fairly easy for support to resolve.

The Red Hat customer portal is essentially folks volunteering their time - so, you may not get a timely response here since it is Sunday. But.. you never know ;-)

Thanks for the help. I tried to open a support case yesterday and today, but there is something wrong with the site. I keep receiving an "Oops" with Exception event id: 757e5f6f7305d6ab2ad13e1e9f85175b493aab348ae756e05c745cf139d9d7ba.

It's no biggy, so I'll just give them a call tomorrow during our contracted support hours.

Hi Matthew. Sorry to hear you were having trouble with opening a case through the Portal. Please feel free to start a new topic about this here if you encounter similar problems in future.

Well, looks like rhn_register worked! I am now able to receive updates via yum. Any reason I should pursue the subscription-manager issue, or is it okay to register my VMs using rhn_register?

Hey - sorry I was MIA for a bit.

I don't actually know if there is any risk/issue if you continue using the Classic RHN vs Subscription Manager. I too have fallen back to using Classic when I could not figure out Sub Mgr. RHEL 7 no longer has Classic ;-)

Thanks for the update - hopefully if someone else finds this thread, they will know to try the same thing.

James, no worries at all. I spoke to support and here is the correct KB article for subscribing to the subscription I have: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/659563

It requires installing virt-who, pointing it to your ESXi, Hyper-V, or RHEV server, then assigning the various subscriptions via subscription-manager.

Thanks for letting us know, Matthew. Did you run into any further issues after this?

Thanks Matthew,

I'm checking that last article you gave us.
I'm in the process of migrating to Satellite 6.0 and as we have the same kind of subscription I was having the same issue. Sat 6 seems to be only through sub manager, which is not an issue at all. Just a bit clumsy with those subs ....
