RHEV Serial Console to VM

Latest response

Does RHEV provides a text or serial console for the VM? I have "VirtIO Console Device Enabled" checked, but how to connect to it? SPICE and VNC works but all I need is just a text console.

Thanks

If you don't have the graphical console software installed on the VM, you should be getting a text/CLI type of interface. If you don't like the Plymouth stuff, just set its theme to "text"

Looking at the oVirt Serial Console in CLI feature page, it seems that the plan is to provide access to the serial console from the rhevm-shell command. Looking at the latest RHEV documentation, it seems that there is not yet an "action vm $VMNAME serial-console" command. The oVirt feature page does have a "Currently operational workaround" in section 1.14.

I am looking at the workaround in the oVirt site. Where can I find the "locateVM.pv" script?

There happens to have been a recent discussion about this feature on the ovirt-users mailing list.

I'm not sure why the locateVM.py script is not posted on the feature page.

OK. I figured out what I did wrong. Here are the steps that work for me.

  • The "50_console" script on the hypervisor need to be executable.
  • A user need to be created "saslpasswd2 -a libvirt username".
  • Connect locally on the hypervisor with command "virsh -c qemu:///system console vmname"

Hopefully it will be built-in in the future version.

Thanks for letting us know what worked for you, Eric.

Note that this feature is integrated in RHV 3.6 already
