IEC 62443-4-2 - Security for Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACS)

Summary

IEC 62443-4-2 is an international standard that defines technical cybersecurity requirements for components used in industrial automation and control systems (IACS). It specifies functional security capabilities across four security levels (SL-C 1 through SL-C 4), where each level represents a defined degree of resistance against adversaries with increasing resources and motivation. SL-C 2 applies to components deployed in environments where threats from adversaries with moderate means and general skills are anticipated, and covers requirements across identification and authentication control, use control, system integrity, data confidentiality, and timely response to events.

Red Hat has achieved IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level Capability 2 (SL-C 2) certification for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.6, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.20, and Red Hat build of MicroShift 4.21, with each certification awarded by TÜV Rheinland. These certifications confirm that each product meets the functional security controls defined in the standard. For customers integrating Red Hat technologies into industrial control systems or operational technology environments, the certifications provide documented, third-party assurance that these products support IEC 62443-compliant deployments.
