Why do I get a SERVFAIL response when using the dig utility to resolve non-qualified hostnames on our local network?

The dig utility requires a query of the FQDN (Fully-Qualified Domain Name) hostnames, because it disregards any domain or search statements specified in the /etc/resolv.conf file. The behavior being seen is by design.
