How do I change the image shown in GRUB?

The image shown in the background of GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) is called the splash image and it displays the list of operating systems you can boot.

In order to customize the splash image its important to take note of 3 things:

  • The image needs to be in xpm format. However, GRUB seems to load gzipped images a bit faster.
