What are the .lease files on RHEV NFS storage domain?

Starting RHEV 3.1, each image on NFS storage domain, in addition to .meta file, will hold also a .lease file.
This is a binary structured file, maintained by vdsm, each of 1Mb in size.

These files were introduced on RHEV3.1 as a preparation for future feature, but are not practically used by vdsm yet.
