Are there limitations for the size of the user and group IDs?
Since the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1, the Linux kernel used 32-bit types for the user and group ID values. The userlevel always did this. Both, uid_t and gid_t, are signed types so the theoretical limit for ID values is 2,147,483,647 (negative values have a special meaning).
