Why does my multiprocessor or hyperthreaded CPU system appear to be running a uniprocessor kernel instead of an SMP one after a system update?

You can check whether your system is using an SMP (symmetric multiprocessor) or UP (uniprocessor) kernel by issuing the command cat /proc/cpuinfo. If you are running an SMP kernel then you should receive information on multiple CPUs if your system has multiple CPUs or a hyperthreaded CPU.
