Why are 'fdisk -l' or 'sfdisk -l' not reporting the correct information on my freshly installed Itanium (ia64) system?

Symptom:

When running the commands fdisk -l or sfdisk -l on an Itanium (ia64) system, the following messages/errors are reported:

# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 254 heads, 63 sectors, 8959 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16002 * 512 bytes
