Why is only 1 processor recognized in an SMP machine?

Commonly, if a Linux instalation only recognizes 1 processor in a Symmetric Multiprocessor (SMP) system, the cause is one or more of the following:

  1. Incorrect BIOS settings

  2. Use of a uni-processor (UP) kernel image
