How to upgrade safely between Red Hat Enterprise Linux X.Y and X.Z
Do not use Anaconda to apply the update
Anaconda must be avoided when applying upgrades as much as possible as it will only use a limited set of packages to apply the updates, will ignore custom yum repositories and may in some versions not keep the old kernel.
Instead, use yum ; it will keep the old kernel and will use all your existing and configured repositories....
