How to configure client systems for Spice smart card sharing

Background

Spice client uses the ubiquitous NSS library to access smart cards available to the system. NSS itself can not talk to smart cards directly, a component called "smart card middleware" does this job. NSS accesses the middleware library through PKCS #11 API. In essence, smart card middleware must be installed and NSS needs to be configured to use it.
